FFXII
I'm currently on a self-imposed break from Final Fantasy XII. As with many other FF games, XII has destroyed any sense of time and responsibility. Every time I look at the clock, approximately 10X as much time has passed compared to my own estimates. This makes me laugh sometimes, if only because laughter is the healthiest way to deal with catastrophe.
On the other hand, it makes for an excellent stimulant. I can pretty much stay awake until any time I choose simply by levelling for hours, which this game has made relatively convenient. I haven't looked at a FAQ except for a few instances either, which means I'll be spending even more time on this game than previously. It's kind of a new experience for me to not cheat my way through an RPG. It's a little less boring, too.
First impressions so far, the loss of the normal FF director and music writer (I forget their names) shows pretty clearly. The music doesn't seem to be on par with past FF's, and the characters seem like they were designed by focus groups. The two leads look a lot like the same in FFX, but the story quality just isn't there.
Of course I'm only probably 1/4-1/3 through the story, so this could completely change. Actually it probably will, I don't remember really getting hooked on an FF game until near the ending.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean about FFXII. I am trying to force myself to take nights off from playing. However, I am not sure if the story is weak, or if we are supposed to only use the characters as a medium to feel how the kingdoms interact (which is a lot harder to get cozy with). I just passed through the mines of Bhajerba or whatever and picked up a 50-chain for the sky pirate den. Yeah, I need to not play for a while.
uh oh, whats the zodiac spear? Is it more powerful than the deathbringer? Do the deathbringer treasure chests count as one of the groups that you cant open?
I relapsed a bit and looked on gamefaqs for good levelling tips, and found the deathbringer method.
The Zodiac Spear has +150 attack. I think it is the best weapon in the game, though I hear the Deathbringer is pretty good too. The chests you aren't supposed to open are:
1. the one across from Old Dalan's place
2. The chest(s) in the SE corner of the Rabanastre Palace celler
3. the chests in Nalbina Dungeon where you get your weapons and armor back
4. I think all 16 chests in the east section of the Phon Coast in the Vaddu Strand
thats enraging.
there is no way anyone can avoid that if they're trying to avoid FAQ's or strategy guides.
i also recently quit trying a completely or even on-principal FAQ-free game. It takes way too long to figure out the harder bosses' nonintuitive and essentially random weaknesses, how to get them to appear, or where to find critical items needed to defeat them.
on the other hand, its nice having 6 deathbringer characters with equal strengths, in a particularly nice leveling/treasure chain area.
oh hey, how do i get longer mist chains? when two character's buttons show up, am i supposed to press them both at the same time?
